(2 Jul 1999) English/Nat MEN'S FASHION GOES BACK TO THE FUTURE
Story: Italian men's fashion
Location: Milan
Date: 27 June 1999
After the sci-fi chic of Vivienne Westwood and the hi-tech sensibility of the new Versace line, Milan men's fashion took futurism to new heights with the new line from MAURIZIO BONAS.
Reflecting the metropolitan society of today and the more casual approach to dressing for the workplace, Bonas brought with narrow lapels, soft jackets and a range of fabrics from technical woollens to cotton and vegetal fibres, while adding a few individual touches such as magnetized buttons and straps.
Bonas also explored the themes of technological research and the computerised history of the world in a line of overtly futuristic garments created through new techniques. Fabrics included plastic, cotton and polyester hi-tech in ice, aluminium and asphalt shades.
Showing in their usual intimate venue, DOLCE AND GABBANA played it straight at first with a line of narrow-lapelled suits in black and navy, but forgot the sensible shoes to match, opting instead for a bizarre array of flip flops and ladies slippers.
Later on they headed for the African savannahs with a cascade of beige and white safari style ensembles and combats, complete with thick, brown leather belts and giant round buckles.
