Originally from 1982, Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson popularized the budding genre of game books with the fighting fantasy series. Long before video games allowed such choices of action (and various consequences) these books were transporting players to other worlds.
As a kid I only had one, but it intrigued me to no end. Now I have the first 8 thanks to this reprint by Wizard books from the early 2000s.
