Carly Wilson, based on the Gold Coast, (left and inset) was pregnant with her first child when she found herself researching gender reveal ideas - and becoming worried about the use of balloons. Because most people, even those conscious of the environment and the impact man-made waste has on marine life, believe balloons are biodegradable. Many of them are marketed that way. 'But that's a complete lie. The idea they are "safe" for the environment comes from one study completed in the 80s that's based on no scientific backing. It wasn't even peer reviewed,' she told FEMAIL. So instead of releasing balloons Carly chose to cut into a cake - which was a pink tint inside - and started a three-year long journey to release a documentary about the dangers of these rubber balls of air. 'Once they enter the atmosphere they burst into a shape that looks very similar to a jellyfish - so when they come back down to the ground, and ultimately end up in the water, sea turtles and other wildlife eat them believing they're squid.' What follows is the tragic loss of thousands of sea turtles (right), which by and large very rarely make it to adulthood anyway, all for the sake of a few seconds of brightly coloured enjoyment.
