Australian Human Rights Commissioner’s Lorraine Finlay says religious freedoms are important and need to be “strengthened and protected”.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Thursday introduced the religious discrimination bill to parliament, despite a divide between MPs about the proposed legislation.
“There certainly is an asymmetry in Australia at the moment between the protection of religious freedom versus the current anti-discrimination framework,” Ms Finlay told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.
“In terms of this particular bill, it was tabled in the parliament today; there’s been a lot of work that’s gone into revising the bill.
“The details are really important, so what I’m looking to do is to take a measured and considered approach to it, I’d like to read the bill in detail.
“I’m looking forward to working constructively with the detail of the bill to form an opinion about whether it does advance religious freedom in Australia and also whether it strikes that right balance between other rights and freedoms that are also important.”
