In this 2nd-year university project (2022), I designed an art gallery that harmoniously integrates light, shadow, and art, creating an immersive experience within a museum setting.
Architectural Approach:
This double-story art gallery embodies the interplay between light and darkness, translating it into a dynamic built structure.
Key Features:
- Welcoming Area & Coffee Bar: An inviting entrance with outdoor seating
- Double-Volume Gallery Space: Emphasizing art through verticality and natural light
- Pottery & Sculpture Studios (Ground Floor): Hands-on creative spaces
- Art School (First Floor): Offices, storage, and classrooms for artistic exploration
Design Principles:
1. Light & Shadow: Manipulating natural light through vertical louvres and solid walls
2. Visual Connectivity: Open-sided façade, bridging east-west light to dark
3. Functional Harmony: Integrating art display, education, and community spaces
4. Materiality: Exposing natural textures, enhancing the artistic experience
Concept Statement:
"Luminous Canvas" explores the symbiosis between art, light, and architecture. By incorporating natural light and shadow, the building becomes a dynamic canvas, elevating the art and visitor experience.
Key Design Elements:
- Off-datum gallery space: Connecting light and dark, east and west
- Vertical louvres: Filtering light, creating an ever-changing atmosphere
- Solid walls: Providing contrast, defining spaces
Impact:
This art gallery aims to:
- Showcase local and international art
- Foster creativity through education and workshops
- Engage the community in artistic dialogue
- Celebrate the interplay between light, shadow, and art
By merging art, light, and architecture, "Luminous Canvas" creates an inspiring and thought-provoking environment, enriching the museum experience.
