A pager is a small device that people used to carry to get messages before cell phones were common. Here’s how it works:
1. Sending a Message: Imagine someone wants to send you a message. They call a special phone number connected to your pager.
2. Message Received: The pager has a small antenna that listens for signals sent over the air, kind of like how a radio picks up music. When your pager’s number is dialed, it catches the signal.
3. Alerting You: Once the pager gets the message, it beeps or vibrates to let you know someone is trying to contact you.
4. Reading the Message: Some pagers just showed a phone number, so you’d see who called and then use a regular phone to call them back. More advanced ones could show short text messages, like “Call home!”
So, pagers were like tiny radios that could receive messages, but you had to use a phone to reply!
On 17 September 2024, around 15:30 local time, thousands of handheld pagers used by Hezbollah, a Lebanese political party and militant group, simultaneously exploded across Lebanon and Syria.
