The United States has long attracted some of the world’s best and brightest. However, many highly skilled immigrants are stuck in low-skilled jobs—a phenomenon known as brain waste. One in four college-educated immigrants experience underemployment or unemployment, according to research by the Migration Policy Institute. As a result, many highly skilled immigrants cannot fully utilize their skills, resulting in billions of dollars in unrealized wages annually, and resulting forgone federal, state, and local tax receipts. In this brief video, MPI researchers Michael Fix and Jeanne Batalova discuss their key findings with regards to immigrant skill underutilization.
