NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh announced Friday that his caucus will vote to bring down the Liberal government when Parliament reconvenes in January. In a statement posted to social media, Singh declared, “The Liberals don’t deserve another chance. That’s why… we will put forward a clear motion of non-confidence in the next sitting of the House of Commons.”
Singh’s announcement marks a significant escalation, as all three major opposition leaders are now calling for an election in the first half of 2025. MPs are set to return to Ottawa on Monday, Jan. 27, but the pressure for an early vote is mounting. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre responded quickly, writing to Governor General Mary Simon to “urgently” reconvene Parliament to test the government’s confidence.
“The Prime Minister has lost the confidence of the House of Commons and cannot continue to govern unless he regains it or wins a new election,” Poilievre wrote. His letter adds another layer to the opposition’s push for change, following Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet’s earlier call for a 2025 election to address the challenges posed by incoming U.S. President Donald Trump.
Singh’s decision comes after weeks of scrutiny. Earlier this week, he called on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to resign in the wake of Chrystia Freeland’s surprise departure from cabinet. However, Singh initially hesitated to commit to a confidence vote, a position he struggled to justify in year-end interviews. NDP House Leader Peter Julian had also suggested the party might wait until late February or early March to introduce a non-confidence motion if Trudeau remained in office.
The timing of Singh’s statement raises questions about his resolve. Royce Koop, a professor of political scientist and co-host of Inside Winnipeg Politics with Kevin Klein, expressed skepticism about Singh’s plans. “He’s done this before,” Koop said, casting doubt on whether the NDP leader will follow through.
Klein emphasized that Canadians should focus on Singh’s role in the Liberal government’s survival. “He and he alone has kept Trudeau in office,” Klein said on the show. “Canadians shouldn’t forget that the years of overspending and Trudeau’s failed leadership are because Singh refused to put Canada before his own pension.”
