The major tip is this: Direct questions get direct answers. That means about one clear sentence.
The three types of direct questions are very similar to three common test questions:
1. True or False (or Yes/No)
2. Fill in the Blank
3. Multiple Choice
When we get asked one of these direct questions after a presentation, we should (a) Listen for the type of question being asked, and (b) answer it in about a sentence.
"When can you have that done?" is a fill-in-the-blank question. You might answer as follows: "I can have that completed by Monday for you."
"Can you finish that by Monday" is a yes/no question that could be answered. "No, however, I can finish it by Tuesday."
Finally, the question, "Is Monday better for you or Wednesday?" is a multiple choice question that you could answer like this: "Wednesday works better for us because of project X."
When answering questions after presentations, make sure you don't overcorrect and give just single words or really short phrases. That will sound standoffish.
Remember, presentations are like a monologue but the questions afterward are supposed to be a dialogue.
