John Houseman was the producer and Ralph Nelson the director. George Ballanchine was the choreographer, and Robert Irving conducted the New York City Ballet Orchestra. E.T.A. Hoffman wrote the television adaptation based on the original narration by Leo Lerman.

According to newspaper reports, it was CBS's first attempt to time shift a live color broadcast to the west coast via Ampex videotape. One review from San Francisco said that the delayed broadcast didn't look as good as it should have, as though they were looking through a water glass.
