The national emergency agency had warned of a tsunami threat after an 8.1 magnitude earthquake hit miles from New Zealand's east coast, near the Kermadec Islands. The warning has now been lifted.
Thousands were told to evacuate on Friday morning causing traffic jams in some places as people scrambled to get to higher ground amid the warnings.
The 8.1-magnitude quake was the largest in a series of tremors that struck the region over several hours, including two earlier tremors that registered with magnitudes over seven.
