You have several options for mounting a red dot sight on your AR-15. Many AR-15s now come with a big Picatinny rail that runs across the top of the receiver AND the forend (also called the handguard). Jeff recommends mounting the sight to the more stable RECEIVER portion of that rail. The sight should be positioned far enough forward to provide adequate eye relief (distance between your eye and the lens). The good news is that red dots allow almost unlimited eye relief. Put the sight where it's comfortable for you, but also put it in a position that keeps your rifle balanced. A red dot sight doesn't magnify like a traditional scope, but you can buy aftermarket magnifier units that mount behind the sight. If you adda magnifier, place the sight farther forward to leave room for it. Red dot mounts come in different heights; choose a height that's comfortable for you AND is high enough so the front "iron" sight isn't blocking your red dot's excellent, wide field of view! There may be a bit of front-to-rear play between the red dot's mount and the slots on the rail. Push the sight against the forward rail before you tighten the screws to lock it down.
