With Tun Mahathir's recent plea to fight a 'common enemy' in order to defend the rights of the Malays, it would seem that a discussion on Malaysia's multi-cultural was much needed. In light of that, I sat down with an intellectual whom I have long since admired and revered. Professor Dr Syed Farid Alatas's shared his views on multiculturalism from the perspective of being a Malaysian and a Muslim, and it resulted in an eye opening discussion.

About Professor Dr Syed Farid Alatas
He is a professor of Sociology and Anthropology, who has been teaching at the National University of Singapore since 1992, and Department of Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Malaya prior to that.
His intellectual legacy resides within the large number of books, articles, chapters, reports, reviews, proceedings and op-eds that he has authored over the years, including notable works, such as: Democracy and Authoritarianism in Indonesia and Malaysia: The Rise of the Post-Colonial State (Alatas, 1997), Alternative Discourses in Asian Social Science: Responses to Eurocentrism (Alatas, 2006a) and Applying Ibn Khaldun: The Recovery of a Lost Tradition in Sociology. He is widely celebrated as a pivotal figure in the increasingly popular discussions about decolonizing universities. He has sent shockwaves through academia and academic disciplines in recent years, prompting uncomfortable examinations of the role that universities have played and continue to play in furthering colonial legacies, such as Eurocentrism and racism.
