2018 Dodge Demon Vs. Bugatti Veyron Video: Muscle Car Of The Week Episode 258 V8TV
What would you do if you had a new 840 HP Dodge Demon and a 1001 HP Bugatti Veyron to play with? Watch the video to see what we did… The Brothers Collection is home to both cars, and we had a lot of fun with this episode of Muscle Car Of The Week!
For the past several years, drag racing fans have had the option to purchase factory-built race cars from Chevrolet, Dodge, and Ford designed to compete in NHRA sanctioned events. Cars like the COPO Camaro, the Cobra Jet Mustang, and the Dodge Challenger Drag Pak are full-on race cars, but they’re not street legal. So Dodge elected to take it to the streets with the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, an 840 horsepower limited edition factory hot rod.
While the COPO Camaro, Cobra Jet and Challenger Drag Pak cars are in some cases faster than the Demon, they are track-only and not legal for the streets.
Demon boasts some big numbers for a production car, with 840 HP and 770 lb. ft as the starting point, the highest HP V8 production engine ever. They claim it’s the quickest production ¼ mile car ever, clicking off a 9.65 at 140 MPH, with 0-60 times of 2.3 seconds. A factory installed trans-brake and supplied wrinkle-wall tires contribute to the car’s ability to lift the front wheels on a sticky dragstrip, again, a first occurrence for a production car. It comes with a passenger seat delete for weight savings, but still tips the scales at 4,280 lbs... Not a factory lightweight! But what that tells you is that this car makes power for days with a 6.2 liter HEMI V8 and a 2.7 liter supercharger cramming 14 lbs of boost down it’s throat.
The car comes with everything you need to be a track hero, except for the ability to drive it. But THAT comes with the supplied 1-day Bondurant driving school class, included with the purchase of a Demon. Specific street tires are available to keep the supplied drag radials fresh.
Demons landed in dealer showrooms in November of 2017, with 3000 US and 300 Canadian cars scheduled. The last one rolled off the assembly line on May 30, 2018, and Dodge closed the chapter on Demon… as promised. They claimed a limited run, and there are no current plans to do it again.
We had some fun with this black Demon, but someone asked if there was a way to demonstrate the car’s power against something comparable in The Brothers Collection. Sounded like a fun idea to us!
This Bugatti Veyron is a 2008 model, but it only has 750 miles on it since new. These cars are powered by an insane W-16 cylinder engine, with 64 valves and 4 turbochargers. It produces a staggering 1001 HP from 8 litres, and will push this little all-wheel-drive hypercar to 253 MPH with a price tag of 1.4 million dollars. Sounds like a fair comparison to our Demon, right?
We were obviously concerned about the safety of all involved and the cars, but we were also pretty excited to see how these cars would stack up. The Bugatti uses all wheel drive on unbelievably expensive tires… rumored to cost $25,000 for 4, so it should hook up even on ice! The Demon is on more traditional drag-radials, but not the wrinkle-walls from the Demon Crate. And the trans-brake function doesn’t activate until the car has over 500 miles on it, and this one has… uh, 17.
Both cars staged at the official starting crack in the fire lane, and using a traditional arm-drop drag start, they were off.
The Bugatti got the jump and never looked back. We think our Demon pilot was a little sleepy off the line, but it called for a round two.
The second time around, the Demon did it’s thing and got the holeshot on the French supercar. Take that, mr. 4 turbo fancypants!
But the scene was getting hot, so it was time to put the toys away before they got taken away on hook trucks.
