Environmentalists are concerned the Department of Conservation is doing too little too late when it comes to stopping the spread of kauri dieback. DOC's permanently closed twenty-one walking tracks from Kaitaia to Tauranga. The New Zealand Tree Council's Mels Barton says they're only shutting low-use tracks and this won't stop the spread of the disease. Earlier this year local mana whenua Te Kawerau a Maki issued a rāhui on the Waitakere Ranges, in a bid to control the disease. The Auckland Council later closed a number of tracks afterwards.
