One of the most ruthless executions in English History took place during the Wars of the Roses. The 4th Duke of Somerset Edmund Beaufort was sentenced to death following the Battle of Tewkesbury, and in front of a large crowd including King Edward IV an axeman took his head clean off. Today Beaufort is still buried headless inside the nearby abbey.
