Russia says it has captured the strategically important town of Soledar today, calling it an important step for its offensive. This comes after days of intense fighting for the town in the Donetsk Oblast. Control of the town could allow Russia to cut off Ukrainian forces in the nearby larger town of Bakhmut another key town for Ukrainian supply lines and for any potential Russian advance.

This news initially reported by Russian news agency TASS also comes after warnings from senior Ukrainian officials that a new Russian offensive could come from Belarus as early as this January and after some NATO countries promised to provide tanks for Kyiv. Kyiv on the other hand, has denied the Russian claims, saying that its units are still in the town.
