Meet The Artists Series: Gérald Toto
Urban Creole, Gérald Toto is a celebrated French singer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist known for being one of the distinctive voices of the iconic Pan-African band Toto Bona Lokua. Born in Paris, to West Indian parents, his family’s collection of vinyl records was like manna from heaven to young Gérald, introducing him to a mix of American soul, Afro-Caribbean dance music, Congolese soukous, and makossa from Cameroon. By the age of ten he was already fascinated by all different types of sounds — starting with the guitar, followed by the bass, and, later, percussion. “My new EP, ‘Spirit Voice’ is performed entirely with sounds created using only my own voice and body. The melodies I sing are based around what I call ‘the language of the heart’, as they are sung in no particular language at all, and can therefore, hopefully, communicate directly with humans from every corner of the world”.
