PM2.5, or particulate matter 2.5, is a term used to describe tiny particles in the air that are 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter. This is about one-fortieth of a human hair in width.
PM2.5 is a mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets that can include:
Dust
Soot
Organic chemicals
Metals
Smoke
Biological matter like pollen, mold, bacteria, and animal dander
PM2.5 can come from a variety of sources, including: cars and trucks, factories, wood burning, and other activities.
Inhaling PM2.5 can be harmful to your health because the particles can travel deep into your lungs. Long-term exposure to PM2.5 can lead to: Reduced lung function, Cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, Increased rate of disease progression, and Reduced life expectancy.
Children and infants are especially susceptible to the harmful effects of PM2.5 because they breathe faster and inhale more air per pound of body weight than adults.
