This June 2023 talk on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine was prompted by recent concerns in the media about the status of the cooling system and safety of the facility.
The content of the talk includes an overview of the design of the VVER reactor, layout and status of the plant and its six reactors, and potential risk factors concerning the cooling system, shelling and power outage.
The aim of this talk is to inform a technical audience and provide context to the media messaging.
The talk is given by Eugene Shwageraus, Professor in Nuclear Energy Systems Engineering at the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, and Course Director for the MPhil in Nuclear Energy. Professor Shwageraus’ research is focussed on physics and engineering of conventional and advanced nuclear power reactors, with a particular interest in Monte Carlo methods applied to radiation transport, as well as modelling of nuclear systems to assist policy decision-making.
