My close friend was homeless. Forced to the street by his incapable mother. Dropped out
of school out of hunger. Failed by a broken system. This wasn’t something I experienced.
This wasn’t something I could have understood. There was no one there for him. He is an
amazing person. A genius. It is through our conversations that I learn more every day. I
see the homeless experience as something disproportionally had by people of color. I
have seen how a series of traumatic events can take a boy or a man and wither him away.
Through the constant thoughts of terror and fright, he slowly begins to wither. Once
completely numb, he feels nothingness. That goes on until the American Dream comes
calling. But once it does, a person coming from nothing, when introduced to options he
becomes satiated. Never quite satisfied, but always seeking more. This is a Capitalistic
satiation. A government is to blame for the welfare of its citizens.
