November 6: St Nicholas

#KnowYourSaints: St Nicholas was a Bishop of Myra. He became well known for his habit of giving gifts to the poor. He is also a known participant in the Council of Nicea who vehemently defended the divinity of Christ against the Arian heresy. He was one of the most popular minor saints commemorated in the Eastern and Western churches and now traditionally associated with the festival of Christmas. In many countries children receive gifts on December 6, which is St. Nicholas Day. He is one of the patron saints of children and of sailors. Nothing certain is known of his life, but he was probably bishop of Myra in the 4th century. He is also known as Nicholas of Myra or Nicholas of Bari.
