YSK: Postbacc premed programs CAN help you strengthen your weaknessses before applying to med school. But some myths about them persist and we’re here to break those down!
💙 They do have high standards! For example, Georgetown University’s Special Master’s Program in Physiology has an average MCAT score of 510 and an average undergrad GPA of 3.3.
💙 They don’t guarantee admission to med school, unfortunately. Georgetown offers interviews with its med school to about 50% of its postbacc program attendees and about 15% are accepted. But, their students have an overall 85% admission rate into a med school, which means a postbacc program can definitely improve your chances of getting into a med school.
🤔 So, how do med schools view applicants from postbacc programs? Nontraditional paths are growing in popularity in general, with more students taking gap years in general. Med schools see more and more applicants from diverse paths, which is a good thing!
❗ About differences in postbacc programs — some programs offer a degree and some a certificate and some neither. You might want to look into the coursework of your preferred program to see if it offers a concentration in an area you want to strengthen or focus on later in your career.
