The tragedy of Dorrance Williams is the story of a man who was buried alive in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1846. He had originally been a land surveyor who first came to the area in 1828, and returned in 1831 after purchasing about 400 acres on the Goguac Prairie, an area just south of downtown Battle Creek. He had a peculiar history in the community as one who was often in the courtroom suing his neighbors.
In 1846, he died (or it was supposed) from kidney disease, but in 1887 when his grave was dug up to be moved to another part of the cemetery, a disturbing discovery was made.
