International Law Weekend (ILW) is the annual conference of the International Law Association - American Branch (ABILA). ILW 2021 was held on October 28-30, 2021. The theme for the conference was "Reinvesting in International Law."
This panel - Debating a WTO TRIPS Waiver for COVID - was held on Thursday, October 28, 2021.
DESCRIPTION: Intellectual property and health has risen again to the top of the global trade agenda and to front-page attention. In October 2020, India and South Africa proposed a waiver of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights to promote the prevention, treatment and containment of COVID-19. A legal and policy debate has ensued over whether the waiver can help global treatment aims, and the United States subsequently endorsed the text-based work on the proposal. In the run-up to the upcoming 12th WTO Ministerial Conference in Geneva, this panel brings together leading intellectual property experts to explore the process and politics surrounding the waiver proposal.
