(31 Dec 2018) Security in the Brazilian capital was being stepped up on Monday ahead of the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect Jair Bolsonaro on January 1st.
Soldiers have built fences, blocked streets, and installed checkpoints around Brasilia's government buildings and the area where the ceremony will take place.
Airspace above the city will be closed and only the Brazilian Air Force is authorised to fly overhead.
Brazil's military has also deployed anti-aircraft missiles and fighter jets as part of its security preparations.
Brazilian authorities said security preparations for the inauguration were the most comprehensive ever.
On the ground, more than 3000 police and military will take to the streets.
Bolsonaro has been a polemic figure in Brazil and security around the future president has been elevated following a September 6 knife attack that left him with a ruptured intestine.
Supporters of Bolsonaro have begun arriving in the capital, where as many as 500, 000 people are expected to attend Tuesday's event, according to the Secretary of Public Security in Brasilia.
According to the local media, the hotels are almost full, with more rooms booked than during the World Cup in 2014.
Head of states and representatives of foreign governments will attend the ceremony, among them the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu; the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban and the Bolivian president Evo Morales.
