The Congress high command on Wednesday finally decided on the name of the chief minister of Karnataka after days of brainstorming and powerplay by the two top contenders – Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar. Veteran party leader Siddaramaiah will return as the chief minister of the state for a second term and state Congress chief DK Shivakumar will be his deputy. Reportedly, former Congress president Sonia Gandhi acted as a peacemaker in the CM face crisis. The swearing-in ceremony is likely to be held on Saturday (May 20). In the May 10 elections to the 224-member Assembly, the Congress secured a simple majority with 135 seats, while the ruling BJP and the Janata Dal (Secular) secured 66 and 19, respectively. Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar played a significant role in the Congress's emphatic win in the recently held Assembly election in Karnataka in which the party won 135 of the 224 assembly seats, and ousted the BJP from power.
