My friend L joined me on my most recent hike in the Appenzell region. It was her first time hiking in Switzerland and the Saxer Lücke hike was most certainly the best idea. This ridge hike had been on my list for a while and it was the perfect opportunity to show L the stunning mountain landscapes of the Swiss Alpstein.
To start, we took the cable car from Brülisau to Hoher Kasten and then hiked to Staubern (had our picnic sandwiches and a beer at the mountain hut), then continued onto Saxer Lücke, descended down to Bollenwees and Fälensee (they are next to each other), and then finally hiked back to our starting point at the Brülisau cable car station (but first, through a rather knee-aching steep descent on a road in the forest). It was a 17 km hike for the whole route and took us ~5 hours.
The mountain trail is well-maintained and not exposed, but had some steep slopes to one side of the trail. The majority of the trail is downhill with rocky uneven terrain and some steep stairs, so it was a tad straining on the knees but not really a difficult hike for us. The trail was quite busy, but that was to be expected as we went on a Sunday and it is a very popular hiking spot. We had a lot of fun on the trail and I think L really enjoyed her first hike in Switzerland!
