On July 4, 1986, France's fourth-generation Rafail lightweight fighter made its maiden demonstration flight. Today, the planes are the backbone of the French Air Force and are also fielded in small numbers by four other countries.
France produced its third fourth-generation fighter, the Rafail, after the Mirage 2000 and Mirage 4000, which made their first flights in 1978 and 1979, respectively. The former made up the majority of the French fleet and served as an equivalent to the American F-16 Fighting Falcon, despite having a far shorter manufacturing run and several serious flaws, such as dependency on a significantly less powerful engine.
