There was a recent YouTube comment (posted on my December 1st 2024 lesson), that mentioned how helpful it is to learn scale shapes that cover the neck laterally. Getting a scale to naturally do this requires a guitarist to make changes in how scales are seen on the neck. Since scales are typically memorized in one position, we need a scale trick to adjust them laterally.
In this lesson, I’m going to explain how to take the notes from an “in position” scale pattern and move the notes along the neck laterally.
This note relocation method is helpful when it comes to creating scales that are better for; phrasing, playing more interesting lines, easier to fret, and scales that work faster through multiple positions along the guitar fingerboard.
Intervals are the easiest way to take notes from “one position” over to other multi-position locations. To learn this interval method, I like to use what I call, “Pattern Blocks.” The Pattern Block approach uses isolated note intervals to help visualize new note locations from one place to another along the neck.
To show you how Pattern Blocks work, I’ve taken a note group from “A” Minor Pentatonic scale and set them up along the neck using the Pattern Block system. I’ve also composed a couple of example licks that help show how Pattern Blocks can be used to start playing better guitar solos.
