Topics covered: Overview of Groundwater Modeling, Groundwater in Hydrologic Cycle, Zones of Porous Media.
1. Ever since I took a Groundwater Hydrology course in my final year undergraduate in 2003, I developed an intense passion for groundwater flow and groundwater contamination for the following reasons.
(a) Why does a hand-dug well dry up annually in northern Nigeria, usually from February to around April or until rainfall stabilizes in May or even June? While growing up in the 80s until the mid-90s, the one-and-only hand-dug well in our big family house never dried up throughout the year despite the huge daily withdrawal rates from the well which served as a stand-by water source whenever pipe-borne water ceases to flow from the taps. Mark you, tap water runs almost daily in those good old days. Around the mid-90s, tap water became a scarce commodity in Zaria City, the only well in the compound and other wells in the vicinity and beyond started drying up before the onset of the rainy season. This is a classical case of groundwater flow problems.
(b) Around the early 90s, a hand-dug well near our table-tennis playing field suddenly developed a kerosene-like taste and smell. This is a classical case of a groundwater contamination issue.
2. The above 2 instances ignited a strong passion in me as a young undergraduate to specialize in groundwater flow and groundwater contamination with a view to understanding the full dynamics of groundwater flow.
3. My first final-year individual project topic which I proposed to my supervisor was about groundwater flow monitoring. It would later be changed to a topic about water distribution networks due to the scarcity of relevant data.
4. During my PhD coursework at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals, Saudi Arabia, my passion for groundwater flow and groundwater contamination was re-ignited by the 2 courses that I took, one in Groundwater Planning and Management and the other one in Advanced Contaminant Transport in Porous Media. These two courses influenced my choice of dissertation research topic which involved simulating a groundwater flow and remediating contaminated soil using electrokinetics and adsorption techniques.
5. LEARN GROUNDWATER MODELING Playlist consists of 13 lectures whose total duration is about 20 hours. I presented these lectures to MSc and PhD students in 2017 at the Department of Water Resources & Environmental Engineering (WREE), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Nigeria. The MSc students who took the course as Groundwater Modeling would later use MODFLOW program to model a practical groundwater flow problem while the PhD students who took the course as Advanced Mathematical Modeling would later use COMSOL Multiphysics program to model any problem of their choices numerically using any of the modules available in the program.
6. Even undergraduates studying Groundwater Hydrology in civil engineering and geology would these videos useful, especially 1 - 10.
7. Despite the fact that the Laplace equation of groundwater flow was only introduced, the videos would certainly build a rock-solid foundation in groundwater flow and modeling. Happy viewing.
