The EPLF encouraged cultural work from 1975 onwards, in the form of a full-time central cultural troupe and innumerable smaller amateur ones in military units and non-combatant departments. These groups usually produced variety shows dominated by music, song and dance representing all Eritrean nationalities, as well as educational and political sketches. Stage drama became more prominent when a Section of Literature and Drama was introduced in 1981 as part of the Division of Culture in the Department of Political Orientation, Education and Culture. Women performers became increasingly prominent like Abrehet Ankere, Liya Goitom, Birikti Weldeslase Tanki, Zeyneb Beshir Senait Debesay.
The performing arts in the EPLF featured mainly songs, posters, music, drama, and dance-related to all nationalities of the country. The Cultural Department of the EPLF was engaged in several artistic works, a great many of which reflected revolutionary themes like the one given by Mulugheta Bein [Wedi Zagir]. Drama performances included short and long tragedies, short comedies and comic sketches.
