Transport for London (TFL) makes much of the operational data it gathers while running the city’s public transportation system and major roads network available. Beginning 10 years ago, this open-source approach has allowed companies – including tech start-ups – to develop apps that offer real-time travel advice, transforming passenger journeys. The decision also brought a number of additional benefits, not least boost of £130 million a year for London’s economy, says the organisation’s outgoing head of innovation Rikesh Shah. He discusses how the cloud and leveraging digital technologies are critical in the project’s success–and how they continue to underpin TFL’s ongoing innovations.
