STORYLINE:
Sierra Leone's once mighty and long-feared rebel leader, Foday Sankoh, has appeared in the High Court in Freetown to face murder charges.
Sankoh was joined by 16 other rebels who were charged with the deaths of 20 peace protesters outside his house in Freetown in May 2000 after they had marched through the streets demanding an end to his Revolutionary United Front.
As U-N peacekeepers tried to keep the angry crowd from reaching Sankoh's house, rebel fighters standing behind the troops fired through the U-N ranks, spraying the crowd with automatic weapons fire and rocket-propelled grenades.
Sankoh's capture in a shoot-out later that month sparked celebrations throughout war ravaged Sierra Leone. The soldier who shot him, leading to his capture, became a national hero.
Associated Press photo's taken of Sankoh in custody were sold on the streets as mementos.
Since his capture he has been detained by police.
In freetown on Wednesday, crowds awaited Sankoh's arrival outside the court. His case, which has already been adjourned several times, was again postponed, with prosecutors saying they needed more time to detain yet more people.
The trial will resume in mid July.
