I called him over to the bales and he actually came! And when I turned one over he got a feed. He was there quite a while and it looks like it went well for him. It began to rain lightly – a bit heavier than the “heavy mist” I mentioned a couple of days ago. My camera survived! YAY!
I tried to call his partner over first but she was too shy. Why did he come? I think he only ever got a look under one bale months ago when she showed him what a good provider I could be. Perhaps I was particularly persuasive. I hadn't tried this before, by the way – calling the new magpies for a bale.
And I have to say the bale didn't look promising when I turned it over. Very little movement, certainly not the “crawling with roaches” you sometimes get. There were still plenty of roaches there and he was prepared to look for them.
Oh – I set six bales up yesterday. I think there's five old ones by the zucchini plants I cut out the other day. When they come by the old bales will be the first ones offered and hopefully the new ones will populate themselves with bugs in the meanwhile. And I have no idea how often they'll be coming by.
And I put some sticks under a couple of the new bales to see if they encourage bugs by creating more room. I'd been meaning to try this for a long time and finally got around to it. Two with decent-sized sticks, two with little sticks, two with no sticks. We'll see what works or if it's just a waste of (useless) sticks.
It's interesting how the older hay bales are breaking down more slowly than the newer ones – same supplier, different types of grass. And when I say “interesting”, I mean interesting to me. I'm sure it bores everyone else to tears.
Have a good one!
