The Tonga tsunami and volcano disaster has been addressed by Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the United Nations. 84,000 people, the equivalent of 80% of the population, have been impacted by the eruption of underwater volcano Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai and the subsequent tsunami. All houses on the island of Mango have been destroyed, with extensive damage across the Fonoifua and Nomuka islands, the UN has reported. Rebuilding communication services and delivering humanitarian aid to the Pacific nation remains a priority.
