Spent 3 days fly fishing on the Hoh River in Forks, Washington, hunting for the legendary PNW chrome.
Despite having no previous experience fly fishing for steelhead, and only a couple days practice on the spey rod, and going without a guide, we still managed to hook and fight a massive steelhead on our first day. But inexperience let it get away, of course the battery was dead, and large lessons were learned.
Although floating is by far the best way to access most of the river, a large majority of it is still accessible by vehicle and hiking. Our next trip we will hire a local guide to float and learn the proper techniques.
My biggest lesson learned...spey casting is difficult.
Huge thank you to @LostcoastoutfittersSfFlyshop and the team there for their endless and priceless advice.
