Should we as a country scrap plans for nuclear since there are many claims of corruption, and a nuclear build would create much more. The release of the 'State of Capture' report and the leaks of the so-called Guptaemails have strengthened calls from many different groups for closer scrutiny of government's nuclear plans.
To make matters more complicated those plans are in limbo.
Government made decisions and passed laws that set the groundwork for the procurement of 9600Megawatts of nuclear energy, to take the percentage of power coming from nuclear from 5 per cent to 13 per cent by 2030. But in a major reversal earlier this year the Western Cape High Court declared those moves illegal.
This means without a successful appeal, government will have to start again, but this time with greater public and parliamentary participation. Well the Nuclear Industry Association of South Africa or NIASA has called for a transparent process. But it maintains that nuclear is the most viable option to increase our power generation capacity. To discuss we're joined by the MD of NIASA, Knox Msebenzi.
