James Currie, with the MCHD Communications department speaks with Amy Crosby, statewide coordinator of Reach Out and Read Alabama.
Reach Out and Read (ROR) is the early literacy program of the American Academy of Pediatrics. In 2020, the program served close to 50,000 Alabama children, 6 months to five years of age. In the program, a child receives a free, brand new, age-appropriate book at each well child visit.
Why is this program important? There has been a wealth of research stating that reading and talking with your child has incredible and positive long-term outcomes. This supports brain development, attachment and a host of other things that are only helpful to the child as they age.
