Always replace both inner and outer bushing sets together. Inspect the channel in the rear of the transmission housing/case for wear.
Address wobble issues immediately and repair ASAP. For trucks, Jeeps, etc with solid axles, this type of wobble is called DW or death wobble; motorcycles for some reason get terms like "tank slap" which is just silly because we all know there is even greater opportunity for bodily harm on a bike. You know your bike so can usually tell ahead of time when it's feeling unsteady and about to wobble. Slowly apply the rear brakes; The dragging effect of the rear brakes applied with assist with reducing wobble effects while bringing the bike to a safe stop.
Outer swing arm bushings are held in place by a nut on the end of a steel rod. This rod runs from one side of the bike, through the swing arm, through a channel in the rear of the aluminum transmission case, through the other side of the swing arm and out to the other side to another nut. Wobble of the entire swing arm forces the steel rod against the sidewall of the channel in the transmission case which increases its diameter over time. Damage to the casing eventually reaches a point where replacing bushings no longer works, and replacing a transmission case is expensive. Don't forget to grease the rod when reinstalling it all.

Come visit the group. With over 80,000 members and still growing, we are one of The largest online groups supporting owners, and those interested in buying, HD's largest models based on the longer and more comfortable touring frame. Modifications, upgrades, places to go (or avoid), scenic routes, ride events and even finding someone to ride with nearby. We do allow sales of used parts and shop takes-offs, but this is a discussion/support based group so does not allow bike sales. There are enough of those in existence already. Thank you and God bless.
