The situation of the Guarani - an indigenous people group in Bolivia - is in many ways not so different from that of the Maoris in New Zealand. In some regions, people have been working without pay for years, and many children don't go to school.
In theory, the parents could move away, but they have nowhere to go. Often they are heavily in debt to wealthy landowners, many of whom still treat their workers like slaves. A United Nations declaration issued last year on the rights of indigenous peoples is designed to change all that.
