Your Medication Dexmethylphenidate
Dexmethylphenidate is also known by the brand names: Focalin and Focalin XR.
Dexmethylphenidate comes in 2.5, 5, and 10mg tablets, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40mg extended-release capsules.
Dexmethylphenidate is most commonly used for attention deficit problems with hyperactivity. It may also be given to you for other reasons. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist. No matter what your doctor has you taking it for, dexmethylphenidate is usually taken by mouth with or without food. It may be best to take this medication early in the day to help prevent sleep problems. The extended release capsule may also be opened and the contents sprinkled in food, such as applesauce; but make sure the medication is swallowed whole. DO NOT CHEW.
If you miss a dose of dexmethylphenidate:
• Skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time
• Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses
The best way to store dexmethylphenidate:
• Store at room temperature
• Protect from light
• Store in a dry place. Do not store in a bathroom or refrigerator.
• Keep all drugs in a safe place. Keep all drugs out of the reach of children and pets.
• Check with your pharmacist about how to throw out unused drugs.
Usual doses of dexmethylphenidate ranges from 2.5mg to 40mg daily.
Some common side effects with dexmethylphenidate include headache, insomnia, restlessness, anxiety, depressed appetite, dry mouth, and abdominal pain.
Some less common side effects include dizziness, fever, mood swings, itching, nausea, vomiting, and weight loss.
Do not take dexmethylphenidate if:
• You have anxiety, tension, and agitation
• Glaucoma
• Motor tics
• Family history of Tourette’s syndrome
• Concurrent use with or within 14 days following discontinuation with monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) therapy
While taking dexmethylphenidate, remember it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have:
• Signs of an allergic reaction, like rash; hives; itching; blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever
• Joint pain, muscle pain or weakness
• A heartbeat that does not feel normal
• Very bad headache, upset stomach, or throwing up
• Blured vision
• Dark urine or yellow skin or eyes
