Gala Organ Concert: Peter Dyke
Tuesday 13 September | 7 pm
Join Peter Dyke as he performs a Gala Organ Concert on the evening of Tuesday 13 September.
This year marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of César Franck, whose music for the organ is richly colourful and often profoundly moving. Franck was born in Belgium, but lived and worked in Paris for most of his life. The works from the end of his life were written while the Eiffel Tower was being built just a mile and a half away from his church on the left bank of the Seine, and they show a remarkable confidence and assurance, bringing a new symphonic quality to organ music.
Peter Dyke will play Franck’s final works, his Trois Chorals. Each of these has an original hymn-like melody at its heart, but is clothed in symphonic colour and development to create an emotional journey. The most famous of these, the third Chorale, was completed only while the composer was on his deathbed, but ends triumphantly and defiantly. Peter will also play three short chorale preludes from both Bach’s Orgelbüchlein, and also the contemporary Orgelbüchlein Project, which contains music from a variety of present-day composers.
The concert will include a large screen projection from the organ loft.
