Petitioning the government is a fundamental right of all US citizens under the first amendment of the Bill of Rights. The right to petition the government has its roots dating back to 1215, when King John signed the Magna Carta. Since 1215, this document has been the cornerstone establishing citizen rights, and recognizes that even the king is not above the law. In the US, the right to petition was originally limited to Congress and federal courts. Today, that rights is expanded to include state and local legislatures and executive branches. In addition to learning about this fundamental right, this video teaches you the elements in a petition and how to go about it.
