Pat is a man with Druid powers. Loves mother Nature, with a really well prepared boat. Do come and join in the fantastic Journey as he sails solo nonstop around the world.
The 2022 race follows on from the 2018 race which was the second one ever, on 50th anniversary of the first GGR, which was famously won by Robin Knox-Johnston - it was the first time a person sailed single handed, non-stop around the world
The first two races had Irish boats - Bill King's GALWAY BLAZER in 1968; the second race in 2018 had Gregor McGuckin's HANLEY ENERGY ENDURANCE. Both boats retired due to technical difficulties. We therefore have unfinished business. Indeed, no Irish person has ever sailed solo, non-stop around the world – I aim to change that.
I bring a lifetime of seamanship to this project. As well as an accomplished offshore sailor I have spent many years as an Atlantic fishing vessel skipper, safely captaining a large trawler with up to 16 crew into some of the most violent and dangerous waters in the world. I am physically and mentally prepared to face the rigours of this race with a determination to win.
A sailor is only as good as his boat. To meet the regulations of the race I have thoroughly researched, acquired and have refitted an Alan Pape designed Saltram Saga 36 for the race. A hugely capable offshore sailing vessel with excellent seakeeping ability through its long keel profile, cutter rig and transom hung rudder – this boat was built for the Southern Ocean.
Looking forward to hearing from you
