Jean Renoir was already a well respected filmmaker before moving to Hollywood in the 1940's. Having laid groundwork in French cinema with La Grande Illusion (1937) and The Rules of the Game (1939), Renoir fled the country at the outbreak of World War II and travelled to Hollywood. In total Renoir would make six films while in America, with The Southerner (1945) regarded as the best.
