The Telangana government has banned the manufacture, storage, distribution, and sale of gutka and pan masala containing tobacco and nicotine in the state for one year with effect from May 24, 2024. The ban was issued in the interest of public health. The Food Safety Commissioner's order states that the prohibition will be enforced under the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006.
"Telangana state hereby prohibits the manufacture, storage, distribution, transportation and sale of Gutkha/Pan masala which contains tobacco and nicotine as an ingredient which is packed in sachets/pouches/package/containers etc., or by whatever name it is called in the entire State of Telangana for one year with effect from May 24, 2024," the order read.
The move comes amid growing concerns related to the consumption of Gutka and pan masala. The products are often linked to oral cancer, oral submucous fibrosis and other health problems.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Food Safety has requested the public to cooperate with the authorities in complying with the new regulation, to safeguard their health and well-being.
Gutka and Pan Masala are often laced with addictive substances like nicotine and tobacco and pose significant risks to consumers' health, ranging from oral cancer to cardiovascular diseases. The prolonged use of these products can lead to various health complications, including addiction, oral lesions, and even life-threatening conditions like cancer.
By enforcing a statewide ban for one year, the Revanth Reddy-led Telangana government has sought not only to deter the consumption of these products but also to promote healthier lifestyle choices among its people.
