Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says the school year will be pushed back by two weeks in light of the state's COVID wave - a move which she deems "necessary".
Ms Palaszczuk said this will ensure students will not be going to school during the peak of the wave, which will be during the last week of January and first week of February.
"So we will be starting the school year - it will be moving from Monday January 24th to Monday February the 7th,"she said during a media conference on Sunday.
"This is a delay but it is a necessary delay because of the wave that Queensland will be experiencing."
She said, however, year 11 and 12 students will commence remote learning from Monday January 31.
She also said for the remaining school cohort there will be an extra week at the end of the year so they will finish on Friday December 16.
