(26 Dec 2021) Tourists and their guide visiting Desmond Tutu's house in Soweto expressed shock on Sunday at news of his death.
Tutu, South Africa’s Nobel Peace Prize-winning activist for racial justice and LGBT rights and retired Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, died aged 90, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Sunday.
Outside Tutu's residence, Catherine Otoibhi, a tourist from the UK, said they had just arrived at the house while on a tour of the area when they heard the news of his passing.
"I'm absolutely shocked, I've got no words... for somebody who touched so many people's lives, it's a lot," Otoibhi said.
Tour guide Samuel Seabela also expressed his shock.
Tutu was diagnosed with prostate cancer in the late 1990s and in recent years he was hospitalised on several occasions to treat infections associated with his treatment.
An uncompromising foe of apartheid - South Africa’s brutal regime of oppression against the Black majority - Tutu worked tirelessly, though non-violently, for its downfall.
