Heading into the final weekend of the 1971 championship, both Scotland (winless from 3 matches) and England (1 win with 1 draw) were playing for pride-and the Calcutta Cup-at the headquarters of the RFU. Scotland had not won away at Twickenham for 33 years, spanning 12 matches. Though this match-up lacked the star power which later Calcutta Cup matches had, the heroics of future Lions Tony Neary, Fran Cotton (both of England), Gordon Brown, and Billy Steele (representing Scotland) were on display this day. Also worth noting is the performance of Scottish No. 9 Duncan Paterson (the uncle of future Scotland star Chris Paterson) in this classic match against the Auld Enemy.
